Would you be able to spot a doorstep scam?

What is a doorstep scam and would you be vigilant enough to spot it?

A doorstep scam is when someone approaches your door with the aim of trying to scam you out of your money or trying to gain entry to your home to steal from you.

It is common for doorstep scammers to target older people. According to National Trading Standards 85% of victims are over 65. This is a worrying statistic, but there are many ways to protect yourself from them.

There are legitimate tradespeople and officials out there who may knock on your door, but it is always wise to be on your guard when answering your door. You would think a doorstep scammer would be obviously pushy and determined but they can also be very polite and friendly which can make it easier for you to fall victim to them.

The five main types of scam to look out for are:

  • Rouge traders
  • Bogus officials
  • Bogus charity collections
  • Fake consumer surveys
  • Hard luck stories
